Magnesium Oxide Product Overview

Light magnesium oxide (MgO Light) is a white powdery inorganic compound with the chemical formula MgO. Known for its low density, high purity, and large surface area, it is produced by high-temperature calcination of magnesite or precipitation from brine. It has a wide range of uses and is an indispensable material in the industrial and food sectors.

Magnesium oxide characteristics:

1. Physical Properties: White or light yellow powder with a loose texture, large volume, and low density (0.3–0.5 g/cm³). Calcination temperature is approximately 700–1000°C, resulting in small crystals and a large specific surface area.

2. Chemical Properties: Chemical formula: MgO. Purity generally ranges from 85%–96%, with high purity reaching over 99%. Highly reactive, it reacts quickly with water and acids. It is highly alkaline and has a neutralizing effect on acids.

3. Performance Characteristics: High reactivity and excellent adsorption. It has strong adsorption capacity for moisture, carbon dioxide, and hazardous substances.


Light magnesium oxide is a highly reactive alkaline material with a large specific surface area and outstanding adsorption and reactivity properties. It is widely used in building materials, agriculture, environmental protection, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.


Magnesium oxide technology

Carbonation method

Active magnesium oxide can be obtained by calcining dolomite or magnesite, digesting with water, carbonating, calcining and crushing. The brine dolomite lime method uses seawater or brine as raw materials to react with lime or dolomite to produce a precipitation reaction. The obtained magnesium hydroxide precipitate is filtered, dried and calcined to produce active magnesium oxide. Magnesium powder-sulfuric acid-ammonium carbonate method Magnesium powder and other magnesium-containing raw materials react with sulfuric acid to produce magnesium sulfate solution, and its MgO+H2SO4→MgSO4+H2O magnesium sulfate solution reacts with ammonium bicarbonate to produce magnesium carbonate precipitate, and its MgSO4+NH4HCO3+NH3→MgCO3↓+(NH4)2SO4. The precipitate is then filtered, separated, washed, dried, calcined and crushed to produce active magnesium oxide.

Sintering method

Use fused magnesium block as raw material. After material selection, crushing and screening, it is fully mixed with a certain proportion of liquid titanium dioxide, then washed, dried and sintered, and the particle size of 40 to 150 is screened out, which is the finished high-temperature electrical grade magnesium oxide.
Brine carbon ammonium method
Brine is reacted with ammonium bicarbonate to generate basic magnesium carbonate, which is then aged, washed, dehydrated, dried and calcined. After crushing, it is purified and heat-treated to obtain silicon steel grade magnesium oxide.

Electrofusion method

High-purity magnesium oxide is used as raw material and the finished product is obtained by electrofusion.

Hydrochloric acid method

The waste material of heavy magnesium oxide production is sent to the reactor, hydrochloric acid is added to react to generate magnesium chloride hexahydrate, and then sodium carbonate is added to react to generate basic magnesium carbonate, which is washed with water, calcined at high temperature, and crushed after cooling to obtain magnetic magnesium oxide.

Theory

Magnesium Oxide exhibits a strong affinity for moisture and carbon dioxide, forming magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate upon reaction. This makes it an effective material for applications requiring reactivity and absorption capabilities. Its thermal stability and basic nature also allow it to function as a refractory and neutralizing agent.
